One of the city’s biggest music festivals, NXNE, returns this June 11-18. You can expect crowds at the big free events at Dundas Square with bands like The Flaming Lips, but NXNE is mostly about bands in clubs. In addition to music, NXNE is amping up the comedy this year with showcases across the city.
Much of the festival is bands playing in clubs, including local venues like The Dakota, Painted Lady and The Garrison, for which you will need to pay cover or purchase a wristband. Locally, NXNE also features some more unconventional performances. Plus, one of the hubs of the comedy festival is Lower Ossington Theatre, specifically the LOT 100 venue.
Once again this year, Live in Bellwoods is hosting free music in Trinity Bellwoods Park. This year they are calling it Great Heart Festival 2012 and offering 4 afternoons of live performers from Thursday, June 14 at 2PM until Sunday, June 17 at 5PM. Performers include The Belle Game, Ben Caplan, Octoberman, and lots of other talented musicians.
NXNE Comedy is a mix of formats, mostly really quick stand-up sets, but here are some other options: Thursday is sketch comedy and there is something called “Twitter Gong Shows” on Saturday night, all at Lower Ossington Theatre.
