Local Jane’s Walks May 2-4, 2014

Jane’s Walksjaneslogo are happening all over the world this weekend, and you should definitely check one out, especially since there are a few walks in the local area.

Named after famous Toronto native Jane Jacobs, Jane’s Walks are free, locally organized walking tours in which people get together to learn about and celebrate neighborhoods. Anyone can lead a walk, and they can cover any topic the leader chooses. You don’t have to sign up or pay to walk. Just show up at the appointed time and follow along.

Local walks this weekend include:

  • The Cornucopia on Dundas West: Geologic, Ethnic & Personal Experience – Sunday at 3PM at St. Luke’s Elementary School, Ossington North of Dundas. This 2 hour walk is led by Alec Keefer of Toronto Architectural Society, and will cover history, geology and ethnic groups in the Dundas West neighborhood
  • Anatomy of a Street Festival, Year 2 is Sunday, May 4 at 11AM starting at Lakeview Ave and Dundas West. This walk is led by the organizers of the Dundas West Fest, which launched to much success last June, and is returning for a second year on June 7, 2014. Come on the walk to learn about how they plan the festival, and about all the growth and business on the street.
  • The Walls Are Alive With the Sounds of Mad People is meeting at Queen and Shaw on Sunday, May 4 at 12 noon. The walk is being led by the Friendly Spike Theatre Band and covers the history of CAMH and the patients who worked for their room and board, including building the wall around the institution.

We have included the local walks in our calendar for your reference.

Jane’s Walks are happening all over the city and it’s suburbs. They are a great way to learn about your neighborhood or someplace you’ve never been, from locals who care. All the walks in our immediate area are on Sunday, but there are plenty of walks on Friday and Saturday too.  As of right now, there are 136 walks planned in Toronto this weekend. Let’s hope for nice weather!
