I have this theory that there were a lot of people in the downtown area were fed up with incumbency, and to them Smitherman represented incumbency, even more than Pantalone did. There was a feeling of ‘throw them out’ that prevailed, and people may have held their noses and voted for Ford, thinking that it’s time to clean and we can go back to the left on other issues once the house is clean. It’s my theory anyway.
