Sunday night at the Dakota

For those of you in the neighbourhood who haven’t been to see The Beauties on a Sunday night at the Dakota Tavern, you are missing out on seeing some great musicians. It had been a while since we stopped in, but last week we did for their post New Years Hangover Party , and the house was packed. There’s often other musicians who stop in and play, or at least come by to listen. In the past we’ve seen Ron Sexsmith, Feist, and others showing up.

In 2010, they released their first full-length self-titled album to much critical acclaim. This month they are even heading to Asbury Park, NJ for a music festival, so they are no longer just our local house band. See them while you can!

Christmas Party at the Painted Lady

The Painted Lady is a small venue for music, but this coming sunday some big names are coming to celebrate Christmas with Nicky, Jess and the crew at this burleque-ish bar. Among the attendees are Kevin Hearn, from the Barenaked Ladies, Big Rude Jake, Gene Hardy (who some of you might remember from his days as one of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir), singer/songwriter Pierson Ross, and many more. The Painted Lady almost never charges a cover, but for this night it’s going to be $15 to get in, but you’ll be getting a great line-up of musicians.

Summerworks Theatre and Music Festival

The annual Summerworks Theatre Festival runs this August 5th-15th. As the largest juried festival in Canada featuring predominantly New Canadian plays, SummerWorks looks to program a festival that uniquely reflects Toronto and Canada’s cultural zeitgeist. 2010 is Summerworks’ 20th year, and one of the venues for both the theatre festival and the sole venue for their music series is The Lower Ossington Theatre.

The Music Series is every night of the festival, with acts performing on the main stage upstairs, and in the new Performance bar downstairs. A great list of Canadian talent kicks off August 5 with The Hidden Cameras playing two nights on the mainstage, and other names like Laura Barrett, The Mountains & The Trees and more. The schedule for both theatre and music at The Lower Ossington Theatre is here:

Individual tickets for theatre and music shows are $10, with package deals available and shows run Aug 5-15.

Spend Canadian Music Week on Ossington

The Canadian Music Fest starts this Wednesday, March 10 and you can see a lot of great shows right here in Ossington Village. We’ll just let you know which venues in the neighborhood are hosting events for the festival. The full schedule is posted here.

The Painted Lady has a full line-up of bands and djs all 4 nights of the fest, and around the corner on Queen @ Dovercourt, The Social will be hosting CMW DJs on Thursday and Saturday.

The Garrison on Dundas is hosting 2 nights of Eye Weekly showcases featuring indie bands like Cadence Weapon and The D’urbervilles.
