We welcome G Gallery to our neighborhood. We learned of G Gallery from Joe Fuda’s Oz Studios blog. This new art gallery is located at the back of Oz Studios building, 134 Ossington, with a separate entrance on Foxley Place, the alley around back.

G Gallery has been open at least a month, and will be open Friday-Sunday from 12-5pm. This is a not a new gallery, having moved from Queen and Sherbourne to Ossington in October. According to their website, G Gallery is a collaboration between John Goodwin, the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph. The gallery is run by Guelph alumni, with assistance from advisors from Guelph faculty and SOFAM.

The current exhibition, called Calculus of Forms, is an examination of urban forms, with a look at architecture, history and politics through models of 7 public housing sites on The Great Lakes. The next exhibit launches Nov. 18 and features work by Miles Collyer.

Just over a year ago Joe Fuda opened a little studio with designer Evan Biddell. Evan left soon after leaving Joe to curate and create from this little storefront next to tequila bar Reposado. The studio represents a lot of the life of Ossington, being a quirky place with many interesting exhibits and events.

Joe is both celebrating and looking back on the year with a book of photos from the year as well as an event this Thursday and showcase at the studio over the next month showcasing 30 of the great artists from the past year.

The book is a great retrospective of the work in the neighbourhood, bringing back memories of nights on Ossington, the G20 conference in the city, Halloween portraits and many exhibits at the show, including one of my favourite exhibits, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, a showcase of the work of Vince Carlucci with pictures of punk rockers from the 70s and 80s. There are only a limited amount of books that Joe has available, so head on over and grab one to pick up some Ossington history.

Joe also keeps a great Tumblr blog which has a great archive of last year’s pictures here.

The exhibition is running from the Thursday night opening until May 15th.

Below are a couple of the pictures from the blog that you can also find in the book, and maybe even for sale in the studio next month.

Nuit Blanche is October 2, 2010. This year marks the 5th anniversary of this night-long art party, and organizers have changed things up a little, keeping the majority of the installations around the subway loop. There will, however, be lots to explore in our part of town, labelled “Zone C” on the official map. Our neighborhood, Trinity Bellwoods Park, Parkdale and Liberty Village, among others, will feature independant art installations from local artists.

Here is a partial list of some of the displays you will be able to see during Nuit Blanche 2010:

InterAccess Gallery is teaming up with the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) with “Close Encounters,” a variety of interactive projects.

Levack Block hosts Brad Blucher and Kyle Clements, Take a Picture, which will require audience participation as viewers are invited to reveal a mystery behind a blank canvas.

Oz Studios is showcasing a sound installation from David Wickland – Toronto, Canada, Christian Joakim – Toronto, and Steven Beites – Sudbury, Canada, called ParaSOUND.

We have also learned that Christian McLeod Gallery will be open all night for Nuit Blanche with an exhibition of new works.

Plus, at least two restaurants will be fueling the revellers with their specialties: Delux is offering their Cuban sandwiches, and Goed Eten will be serving up fries and poutine.

There are also several installations, including dance and sculpture, planned within Trinity Bellwoods Park, MOCCA will stay open all night, and galleries on Queen West are participating in the fun. Enjoy! See something new, but you can still stay in the neighborhood.

I walked by last night and the sign is in place. Further evidence is on the gallery’s own website, which states it is moving from Yonge Street south of Bloor to join the mix of galleries and artists in the Ossington neighborhood.

As expressed on their site, the grand opening will be on Saturday, September 25, from 1-6p. I quote:

131

131 features works from Robert Canali, Liam Crockard, Alex Fischer, Rafael Goldchain, Kate McQuillen, John Monteith, Dominic Nahr, Ed Ou and Noel Rodo-Vankeulen.

131 brings together this diverse group of artists to inaugurate our new space, to introduce our new curatorial team and foremost, to announce our broadened approach to medium-specific programming.

Future Projections is inspired by the history and culture of cinema. This year’s series has exhibits throughout Toronto, including Ossington, and runs September 9-19.

Many of the exhibits will be presented at the new Bell Lightbox, but galleries in our neighborhood will participate. Gallery TPW will feature South African artist William Kentridge’s “Journey to the Moon,” in which he pays homage to French director Georges Méliès’ classic Voyage dans la Lune (1902), also on view at the gallery and widely considered cinema’s first science fiction film. Combining live action and stop motion animation, Journey to the Moon in part pictures the creative process as Kentridge performs for the camera, playing the scientist/artist who dreams of worlds afar but ultimately cannot escape. The exhibit is open September 7 – 19, Tuesday to Sunday 12 to 5 PM.

MOCCA on Queen West will feature Chris Chong Chan Fui and Yasuhiro Morinaga: HEAVENHELL Sep 10, 2010 – Sep 19, 2010, and, also on Queen Street West is Stephen Bulger Gallery/Camera Cinema with Stan Douglas and “Klatsassin,” a film inspired by Kurosawa’s Rashomon, September 9 – 19, Tuesday to Sunday 11 AM to 6 PM.

We know the main point for many is at TIFF is spotting celebrities, and we’re sure they’ll even venture over to Ossington now that we’ve got some of the best nightlife and restaurants in town, but don’t forget the art too!

Featured artists include Adam David Brown, Dean Drever, Dave Dyment, Sky Glabush and Ken Nicol.

If you like (or don’t like) Bears, Scotch, Typograghy, and just good funky installation art, you should definitely stop by. It’s even air conditioned – despite the title of the exhibit.

Adam David Brown has exhibited before at MKG127 for a show called White Noise during February & March, 2009 as well garnered international attention with coverage on Artforum.com. He has also been awarded the 2009 Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts Artist Prize.

Dean Drever has also shown at MKG127 in an exhibition called Bear Minimum in August 2008. We understand Dean likes Bears, and that show featured a life sized fluorescent yellow fuzzy Kodiak. Dean’s Kodiaks have made appearance’s at the Toronto Sculpture Garden, the Vancouver Olympics and the Prime Minister’s office at the G8 summit in Huntsville. Steven Colbert will not be attending.
Dave Dyme exhibited at MKG127 in January 2008 in a show called Room Tone. After that. he was invited to participate in the prestigious residency program at the Glenfiddich distillery in Scotland. It was at this program that Dave created his 100 year old whiskey edition, A Drink To Us (When We’re Both Dead) which has proven to be popular with both collectors of art and whiskey.

Sky Glabush last exhibited at MKG127 in a show called Renting during January & February, 2009. He’s recently been commissioned by the Bank of Montreal to produce two new paintings. His next solo exhibition at MKG127 is scheduled for May, 2011.

Ken Nicol developed quite a following during his first solo exhibition at MKG127, A Room Full of Stuff I Made (And Collected) which took place during March & April, 2009 . Ken’s next solo exhibition at MKG127 is scheduled for October 2011.

The opening is August 7th from 2-5pm and the show will be on until September 4th from Wednesday to Saturday from 12 to 6 PM or by appointment.

It’s because a new tenant has signed on. We received an email from Ian and Laura at Telegramme Prints and Custom Framing. They are very excited to be taking over the lease at 194 Ossington (which once belonged to Monarch Art & Framing and also 1st Run). They signed the lease today and are going to spend the summer working on the space to get it ready to open the first week of September.

Telegramme Prints and Custom Framing is already a thriving business on Queen St East, and now they are expanding to the west end. In addition to signed, numbered, limited edition and otherwise hard to get prints and posters from all over, they’ll be providing all custom framing services at 194 Ossington. That includes competitively priced conservation framing of prints, posters and photographs, canvas stretching, plak mounting and laminating, and unusual wildcard custom framing work. If you click the link above to their website, you’ll see the extensive services that will be available.

There are shots from Patti Smith’s show at Seneca College in 1976, (price of entry: $7.50) as well as Lou Reed playing Massey Hall.

Recently Joe Fuda connected with Vince and put together an expo of some of the shots he took which went up recently at the Oz Studios at 134 Ossington. It’s a cool little show to walk around and remember the era.
