Ossington Tire Is Closing

Ossington Tire’s Facebook announcement

About Ossington Tire

Ossington Tire covers a big chunk of real estate at 146 Ossington, on the west side between Foxley and Argyle. The garage is between YogaSpace to the north and Reposado to the south. The family-run business has been in operation since 1946, and it’s presence harkens back to the industrial history of Ossington Avenue.  It had no shortage of customers from what we could tell, and was especially busy in late fall when cars would line up around the block to change to winter tires each year at Ossington Tire.

Ossington Tire Is Closing

Now the owner is retiring and so, Ossington Tire is closing. The announcement comes with a week and a half to go – your last chance to get your tires replaced on Ossington is next Friday, August 4, 2017. We wish the owner and his employees the best of luck!

So, what’s next for 146 Ossington? It’s a big lot with a lot of potential in a prime neighborhood. Your guess is probably similar to mine. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more, and please do the same! Share in our comments or through social.

Ossington Crit

The crit offered exciting races for different levels, including two kids age groups. There were some crashes, especially when the road got wet, and drew cycle racing fans from across the province.

Ossington Business Profile #23: Les Enfants Terribles http://ossingtonvillage.com/2017/07/ossington-business-profile-23-les-enfants-terribles/ Mon, 17 Jul 2017 13:38:29 +0000 http://ossingtonvillage.com/?p=37709 . . . → Read More: Ossington Business Profile #23: Les Enfants Terribles]]> Today we profile Les Enfants Terribles, an art space at 130 Foxley Place, the alleyway behind Ossington. The student gallery doesn’t have a website, but fittingly, an instagram and a Facebook page.  The students that showcase at this space, which will reopen in September, are as young as high school age. Maybe younger! So when they are back in September, go check out the next generation of Toronto art talent!

Les Enfants Terribles entrance

Les Enfants Terribles Entrance on Foxley Place

We spoke with Jaiden at Les Enfants Terribles for this Ossington business profile.

What’s your business?

It’s not really a business, it’s a free space.  Les Enfants Terribles is a space for Visual Art, Photography and Film students from Etobicoke School of the Arts to show their work in a small gallery like atmosphere.  The students learn how to curate and prepare for their show, host an opening and are available to art fans on weekends following that opening to discuss their work.

How is your business unique?

There is no commerce, it’s really about being able to get student work out there in the real world and prepare them for what’s ahead.

How long have you been in business here?

Our first opening was on December 17th, 2016 and we’ve been consistent with showings ever since.  We’re closed for July and August and will re-open come September.  Check out our Instagram page for details at @lesenfantterriblesossington

What drew you to be here on Ossington?

It’s one of the most interesting areas in the city with a strong connection to the art world in its rich history.  Plus the space was offered to us for free, so how could we say no!

What changes have you seen on Ossington since your business has been here?

Ossington is always moving forward.  We’ve heard the incredible stories of it’s past, we enjoy what’s around us now and can’t wait to see what lies ahead!

How do you see your business and Ossington five years from now?

It’s a good question….  we’re still in development.

We just hope that we’re providing an important place for the artists of tomorrow

What is your favorite spot on Ossington, other than your own? and why?

We have met some incredible neighbours along the way.  Town Moto, Lost and Found, Venezia Bakery are a few that come to mind.  Primarily because they have been very welcoming.  And we have to thank you Ossington Village for being curious about who we are.  We’re a unique, little space in the alley way behind Ossington and Argyle and we’re glad you found us!  Come see a show!

Ossington Now Has a Pop-Up For Naps http://ossingtonvillage.com/2017/07/ossington-now-has-a-pop-up-for-naps/ http://ossingtonvillage.com/2017/07/ossington-now-has-a-pop-up-for-naps/#comments Sun, 16 Jul 2017 16:02:35 +0000 http://ossingtonvillage.com/?p=37714 . . . → Read More: Ossington Now Has a Pop-Up For Naps]]> Casper Cottage logoThere is an Ossington nap pop-up. That’s right, Casper sleepware company just opened a retail store/marketing opportunity where you can take a nap in a bed on Ossington.

The Casper Cottage

Casper mattresses just opened “The Casper Cottage” this weekend at 45 Ossington. The pop-up occupies the space formerly home to Unleashed in the City before it moved to 211 Ossington in January. The marketing team for the mattress brand has transformed the space into what looks like a home decór store in the front, and a row of beds in the back. I walked by this morning but it wasn’t open yet – probably because people don’t need naps right after waking up!

How it works

According to the Casper press release, 45 Ossington is The Casper Cottage, your Toronto summer home. All you need to do to visit the Ossington nap pop-up is either book a bed in advance (maybe via email?) or just swing by on the chance one will be available. Then you can lie down on a Casper bed outifitted with Casper pillows and sheets and sleep in the store. The store/bed rental spot is open until August 20th. Hours are Tuesday – Wednesday 12-8p; Thursday – Friday 12-9p; and Saturday – Sunday 12-8p. If you get tired on a Monday, you’ll have to go home for a nap, or pull a Costanza and sleep under your desk at work.

Store layout

As I mentioned, the “cottage” wasn’t yet open when I walked over, but I did get some photos from the store window.

Ossington nap pop-up exterior

The exterior of the Ossington nap pop-up store by Casper

The front of the store is very retail looking with a white and blue theme. In keeping with the cottage theme, Muskoka chairs sit near the window, and behind that is a canoe filled with pillows.

Ossington nap pop-up interior

Inside the Casper Cottage on Ossington

For the napper, there is a row of beds set up in the back of 45 Ossington. I assume they will change the bedding between naps, and maybe they’ll even provide earplugs and masks, because it is still a retail store and in the open. It doesn’t look like an easy space to sleep, in a store in a row of beds. Maybe they’ll even have curtains between the beds once the store is open.

Ossington nap pop-up beds

In the back of the Casper Cottage are the beds

Based on the content of that Casper blog, this nap pop-up is not a new thing. They’ve done it in NYC, Venice and other parts of Toronto and Canada. This is also not the first big marketing act to take over an entire Ossington store-front: Harley Davidson Café was a huge success with customers and the media last summer. Does this mean more big advertisers on Ossington? Probably.
Will you take a nap on Ossington? Let us know in the comments or via social media.

Ossington will once again be shut down for a street festival on Saturday, July 22nd. The event, a huge success last year, will begin with bicycle races, feature patios throughout the day, and a music festival in the afternoon and night.

The Ossington Crit

The bicycle races that comprise the Ossington Criterium will kick off the day. Professional and amateur cyclists will take over the street in the morning, and, like last year, we’ll be watching the excitement!

The Ossington Music Festival

Bands have been announced for the Dundas West Creemore Stage, located at the north end of the festival strip. The fest features a free stage with live performances by local Toronto bands including Elise LeGrow, Ossington’s own The Reposadists, and Celebration Army. Bands are scheduled from 2-11pm.

The Ossfest Street Festival

All the local restaurants and bars – and you know how good our Ossington restaurants and bars are! – will be offering streetside eating and drinking. Patios out front, on the corner, everywhere! Don’t you remember last year?

In addition, our local shops will host street-side sales of clothing, home decor, and everything else you can find on Ossington.

We will update as more information is available. Save the date – July 22nd.

If you’ve been on Dundas West just east of Ossington today, you likely noticed the equipment and trucks set up for the shoot of Code 8.

About Code 8

Code 8 is a science fiction movie which features Arrow stars – and Canadian cousins – Stephen and Robbie Amell. The project originally began as a short film, which has been released and you can already watch. The two stars and director Jeff Chan started an indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to expand it to a feature film.

Code 8 Filming on Dundas West

Code 8 is filming in the garage space of A-1 Auto Service Repair on the south side of Dundas. This venue is not new to film shoots, as it was previously used in the film Dr. Cabbie.

When I went by this evening, I didn’t see either of the two leads, but there is a chance you will.

I did get some photos on the street. I am not sure if the ice cream truck is part of the set, or craft services.

Code 8 will be filming in Toronto through the end of July.

Below is our overview of Ossington Village Summerlicious opportunities.

What is Summerlicious?

An annual event since SARS in 2003, Summerlicious is a Toronto-wide restaurant promotion. It now has hundreds of restaurants across the city offering prix fixe lunch and dinner menus for 3 weeks in July. The event launches July 7 and runs through July 23. Menus are 3 courses, usually include vegetarian options, and the prices range from $18, $23 to $28 for lunch and $28, $38 and $48 for dinner.

For popular restaurants, which probably includes those in Ossington Village, reservations are recommended.

Ossington Village Summerlicious: Which Restaurants Are Participating

Three local restaurants are offering Summerlicious menus this July, and all three were listed in Now’s Top 20 Picks for Summerlicious 2017: Hawker Bar, Hungry Amoo, and Ufficio.

Hawker Bar, 164 Ossington

The Asian street food snack bar is offering flavorful food at the low end of the cost spectrum for Summerlicious. The 3 course lunch is only $18 and the dinner is $28 and both include some of their top tasty dishes like Sweet Chili Soy Chicken Wings, Laksa and the Banana fritter for dessert. Summerlicious menu

Hungry Amoo, 74 Ossington

Haven’t tried Hungry Amoo’s menu yet? Well, Summerlicious may be the perfect reason. Hungry Amoo’s vibrant Middle Eastern cuisine will be offered at $28 for 3 courses at dinner. With dishes like Tamarind Beef Brisket and a Sour Cream Donut with banana and nutella, this is a good time to sample! The menu

Ufficio, 1214 Dundas West

Are you a fan of Italian food? Fresh fish? This pescatarian restaurant with Italian roots is serving a $38 tasting of some it’s most delicious plates for Summerlicious dinner, like Swordfish Crudo and Grilled Octopus. See the menu here.

All of these restaurants have ample vegetarian options and 3 or 4 choices for each course. Summerlicious may be your chance to try a new place – or revisit a favorite – this July.
