#22 in our series of Ossington Business Profiles is Anice Jewellery. This lovely little retail shop opened almost exactly two years ago at 102 Ossington and has been selling custom jewellery and teaching people to make jewellery ever since. In our business profile, we ask questions about their business and their thoughts on Ossington. Today we hear from the owner of Anice, Brittany Hopkins, in our Anice Jewellery Business Profile.

What is your business?

Anice Jewellery is a custom jewellery store with heart. We make everything in house and by hand, all with love and a touch of grandma’s inspiration (we are named after my grandmother). We specialize in one-of-a-kind pieces and turning old treasures into new love. Bring us your old jewellery and we’ll help you turn it into something new.

How is your business unique?

No other jewellery store does repairs or can make custom pieces on the spot like we do. We work with you every step of the way to design and create a unique piece right in front of your eyes!

How long have you been in business here?

We have been at this location since July 2015.

What drew you to be here on Ossington?

Ossington is a place that is alive at all times of day: from amazing food, to fitness, to clothing, to bars and nightlife: Ossington has something for everyone and we felt it was the perfect neighbourhood to grow with.

What changes have you seen on Ossington since your business has been here?

The sense of community has definitely heightened since we opened: from the opening of so many more shops to the new condo being built across the street from our store: Ossington is becoming such a special and buzzing neighbourhood and we are so happy to be a part of it!

How do you see your business and Ossington five years from now?

We are really focused right now on building our customer relationship program, increasing our workshops and expanding on all kinds of new designs and exciting projects! It has always been our goal to do what we do well and create lasting memories with our clients in the process. The goal for the next 5 years is to do what we do and do it so well. And of course continue to grow because of it!

What is your favorite spot on Ossington, other than your own, and why?

Where to begin?! The oysters at Boehmer are divine, the classes at RIDE Cycle Club and MISFIT Studios keep us sane outside of store hours and nothing says Ossington like an ice cream sandwich from Bang Bang! We love all the shops to be honest. All the business owners we have met have been awesome and we look forward to getting to know the neighbourhood more as it continues to grow.

Stop into 102 Ossington and browse the shop – when the weather’s nice, they often have displays set up on the front patio. Also, check out their schedule for upcoming workshops or schedule your own for a group of friends.

Here’s a list of upcoming Ossington Village food and drink events for June 2017.

Smoke Signals Patio Sundays, Sundays 12-8pm

Smoke Signals patio

They’ve already begun! Every Sunday this summer, Smoke Signals BBQ is utilizing the patio across the street on Dundas West for weekly outdoor patio parties, with their signature barbecue eats and Ace Hill brews. This event is Sundays all summer from 12n-8p, but make a reservation, because it’s going to be popular!

Superpoint 2 Night Pizza Collaboration, Sunday June 11, 4-11p and Monday June 12 4-11pm

Superpoint Pizza Party

Ossington’s newest pizza parlor is throwing a two day pizza party. The reason? They’ll have two special guests collaborating on pizza! These guests are Falco, the Pizza Guru and founding pizza maker at Roberta’s Pizza in Brooklyn, and Toronto’s own Werewolf Pizza, the underground pizza that mysteriously pops up sometimes, but definitely this weekend, at Superpoint. The event runs Sunday and Monday nights, and if you want to try these special pies, we recommend you get there early, because they won’t take reservations. That’s right. It’s strictly first come, first served.

Boehmer Happy hourBoehmer Happy Hour, Wednesday – Saturday, 4-6PM

Deals on oysters, beer and wine are now on offer in the early evenings at Boehmer. Cut out of work a little early and enjoy some $2 oysters and reduced price drinks to accompany them. This special started last week so get over there ands it on the front patio and watch the action on Ossington.

Get Well Turns 5 Celebration, June 21, 5PM-closeGet Well Turns 5

Dundas West craft beer bar and arcade heaven Get Well has been open for 5 years already. Join them, and other Toronto beer and vintage video game lovers, on June 21 for $5 drafts all night. 2012 seems like a really long time ago, and we’ve enjoyed all of the 5 years Get Well has been in the neighborhood. We know we’re not the only ones!

Bar Sybanne Opening Soon at 229 Ossington

It looks like the space recently vacated by LAS won’t be unused for long, because renovations have been going at full force at 229 Ossington. Daily Hive reported it first that Bar Sybanne will be a new Mediterranean restaurant in the space. The venture is from Toronto chef Howard Dubrovsky, formerly of the delicious LAB on College Street. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for Ossington!

Don’t forget our post on food specials by day. If you know of any other upcoming food and drink events, be sure to let us know in the comments or on our Facebook page. Enjoy your meals!

TA2 Sound and MusicTA2 Sound and Music is a booming local business, a post-production and recording studio with two Toronto locations, including one at 68 Ossington Avenue. TA2’s clients include advertisers and their agencies, musicians and labels, and often connects those groups together for campaigns. Sometimes, they even host a concert at TA2.

This three story studio space, with a rooftop deck, also serves as a great event space for the company, and they use it well for parties for their clients. Last night, we attended their exclusive event featuring BMG Music artist LP. It was a great event with, not surprisingly, excellent audio! It helps that LP has a gorgeous voice, but the experts at TA2 can’t be denied either.

We took photos and videos of the space and the LP show, so check it out for yourself!

The festival encompasses Dundas West for 1.5km west to Landsdowne, and features something for everyone, with most of the local businesses participating.

About Dundas West Fest

This is the 5th year of this street festival, and it has always been a big success! So many local businesses participate that it really feels community focused. Not just businesses, either, the community centres, retirement homes and churches also get involved. The event starts at 10am and runs until midnight. Expect crowds and some food and drink line-ups in the afternoon and evening, especially if the weather is good!

The festival includes music, comedy, dance, art, shopping, eating, drinking, and activities for kids. While we don’t have the whole schedule of events, here’s an overview.

MusicLakeview Stage

There are a few stages scattered along Dundas West.

Lakeview Avenue Stage (Beer Store Parking Lot)

This stage, closest to Ossington, is programmed by The Garrison, and it’s another great line-up of talented local Toronto rock bands. The show starts at 5pm, and there will be standing room on the street, or grab a seat at The Garrison or another local patio. The music will run through 11pm. More event information here.

LulaworldLulaworld Stage

Once again, the team from Lula Lounge brings a world music vibe to Dundas West Fest. The free live music starts at 1pm with a huge brass show, open to any horn players who want to participate (there’s a video on their event page so performers can practice!). After that kick-off, the horn theme continues with a slate of talented jazz musicians, until 11PM. The stage is located at Dundas and Brock.

Word On The Street Literary Pop-Up

Word on The Street

Literary festival Word on The Street is popping up at St. Clarens Parkette and Dundas West this Saturday. Many authors and publishers will host panels and readings. The plan is to incorporate local groups and writers and offer something or the whole family. Get your literary fix on Saturday from 11:30am to 6pm.

Slow Dance and Get Down

The dancing scene is strong again, with this event recurring for the 4th year. Taking over from Word on The Street at St Clarens, the dancing starts at 7:30. Everybody, old and young, is welcome to dance at Dundas West Fest.

Vintage Market

With the wealth of vintage shops in this part of town, it’s no wonder there’s a big vintage market at Dundas West Fest. This year, local shop Life of Manek curates the sale, located on the street between Gladstone and Dovercourt.

Rummage Sale

Elephant in the Attic hosts a sale in honor of Dundas West Fest, at 1596 Dundas Street West.

Free Street Yoga

Studio Blue Yoga and Fitness is offering a free class outside to start the day off great. At 10am, bring your mat to the studio at Dundas West of Gladstone for street yoga!

Food and Drink and Patios

The local bars and restaurants will have extended patios and be serving up their best creations. Expect the Portuguese bakeries and butcher shops to serve Portuguese favorites as well! With all the patios, you will find it difficult to make a decision, but knowing the depth and breadth of Dundas West eateries, it will be a good one!

Follow us on instagram and facebook to see live photos. The Festival’s official hashtag is #DuWestFest for your own posts.

For your reference, here are photos from last year’s event to get you excited.

Many of these eateries offer specials and you don’t want to miss some of these deals! We’ve got a roundup of the Ossington food (and drink) specials by day of the week.

Union Restaurant: 1/2 price bottles of wine

That’s right. Union Restaurant offers all their wine at 1/2 price every Monday night. They have a good wine list, too, so if that doesn’t get you out on a Monday, what will?

Salt Wine Bar: 1/2 price wine

The Portuguese restaurant and wine bar just announced this new weekly deal on social media. Another restaurant with a good wine list offering 1/2 price on all their bottles? Enjoy!

Boehmer: Buck a Shuck, 1/2 price wine and $24 Lobster

This special is an Ossington tradition, and we are among the many who hope Boehmer never retires it. Make a reservation or get there early, because this deal is not a secret.

Mr. Flamingo, Taco Tuesdays

Each Tuesday, Mr. Flamingo offers $5 fish tacos and $5 tequila tromba margaritas. Enjoy!

Omaw, $2 Fried Chicken Tuesdays

Southern restaurant Omaw’s new “Toonie Tuesday” promo just started and it’s pretty simple: $2 for fried chicken. Not sure what portions are like, but it’s definitely worth checking out one upcoming Tuesday.

Mr. Flamingo: Buck a Shuck and $30 bottles of cava

Cava and oysters? Sounds like a good date night, or a good Wednesday night with anyone! Head to Mr. Flamingo on Dundas West for both.

Ufficio: Buck a Shuck

Dundas West pescatarian Italian restaurant Ufficio has been offering buck a shuck oysters every Wednesday for a while now, but we think it’s worth reminding you!

Soos Restaurant, Wine Wednesdays

Ossington’s Malaysian restaurant offers $15 off every bottle of wine on their menu on Wednesday nights.

Hawker Bar: Buck a Shuck Oysters

Our local Singapore street food spot just started hawking $1 oysters and $2 oyster tempura every Thursday night from 6-10PM. Pair them with some of the restaurant’s original cocktails and make a night of it!

Prix Fixe Nights

Té, Two Can Dine Plus Wine

Ossington Asian fusion spot Té offers a prix fixe menu with one glass of wine for $25 per person based on 2 sharing. They serve this menu deal Tuesday – Thursday and Sunday nights. A great chance to share some of their food and a drink at a good price!

I received an email this morning detailing the news.

A unique place

Rally was created by Hermann & Audrey, a media agency representing fashion brands and artists. Rally Ossington was a unique “experiment” formed in late 2015 by the agency with support from Hullmark Development. According to today’s release from Hermann & Audrey, the experiment was a success! Their goal of nourishing a creative identity and community in Toronto and the Ossington Village neighborhood was achieved through more than 62 events including pop-up sales, mural projects and art exhibitions.

12 Ossington

Now that Rally is closed, there is no word on what will take over the space which has been an art gallery for years. Before Rally, Angell Gallery filled the room. Probably Hullmark already has a tenant in mind. As soon as we know, we’ll post here!
