Retailer Play Closing After Less Than 6 Months on Ossington

I just found out on social media that retailer Play, which opened at 216 Ossington in November, is closing its doors this week.

The clothing store focused on unique fashion from European and Asian designers not commonly found in Toronto. Although Ossington is building daytime foot traffic, with lots of more established and even “chain” brands setting up shop here, it may be too difficult to create a name for a new indie brand.

Play is having a big sale until end of business Wednesday, March 22nd, on everything but shoes. If you didn’t check it out before, now is your last chance.

We’ll keep you posted when another tenant takes over the space at 216 Ossington Avenue.

Rally Hosts Big Sean Popup Launch

This weekend local gallery and often artspace Rally plays host to another album drop pop-up launch where Detroit hip hop artist Big Sean will be offering some limited edition merchandise including hats, tees, hoodies and Bomber jackets. The pop up will be held simultaneously in his home city of Detroit, LA and New York also – so we think it’s unlikely that he’ll stop by. Given the popularity of these events in the past, including the recent launch of The Weeknd’s album Starboy, we expect that part of Ossington to have lines up the street. See his instagram for more details.

Ossington News and Reviews: January 2017

newsThe latest Ossington news ranges from new business coverage, local restaurants making some top rankings, and a local robbery.

Recent Toronto Best Of Rankings Include Local Restaurants

This time of year features some restaurant rankings, including local restaurants receiving praise from the press.

Toronto’s Best American style restaurants

Toronto Life just released a list of the 12 best spots in Toronto to get American food like burger, fried chicken and bbq, and Omaw and Smoke Signals both made the list.

Best New Restaurants of 2016

Last Ossington Marijuana Dispensary May Have Been Robbed

A customer of Canna Clinic on Ossington claims he was there when the shop was robbed by masked gunman before Christmas. While the owners and employees of the clinic have not spoken at all, this customer has spoken to press and called the police. The dispensary likely does not feel safe contacting police since the police are constantly raiding and causing problems for these businesses in Toronto. The customer does not feel the dispensary is safe to have in the neighborhood.

Ossington News on New Businesses

We noted the openings of both Barber & Co and The Local from Lululemon before year end. Others have noticed and are giving both new businesses some good press.

Lululemon Ossington Opening Friday

Lululemon OssingtonLululemon Store to be called The Local Is Opening Tomorrow

Lululemon is opening a retail concept store called The Local on Ossington this week. We heard the news of this opening back in September, and it’s been confirmed by Lululemon that the concept store will open this Friday, December 16th at 96 Ossington.

Expected to be a Men’s Concept Store

From everything we’ve read, this new Lululemon store will focus on men’s apparel and lifestyle. According to a video posted on the company’s social media, the store will involve collaboration and be a “breeding ground for innovation”.  Perhaps some of the collaboration will occur with other local Ossington businesses. The Local team has already engaged with Academy of Lions founder Dhani Oaks, who is being labelled a “The Local ambassador” on Lululemon’s Facebook account. This is a good partnership for Lululemon, because they want to outfit all of the athletes at the crossfit gym.

There’s lots happening in Ossington Village in both retail and food, and the press is noticing. Here’s a roundup of some recent local news stories.

We’ve said it before, and now others are saying the same thing. With the influx of more and more retail stores, Ossington Avenue is becoming a destination for shoppers. And thanks to multiple building owner Hullmark Developments, more big name retailers are coming next year: We already knew about Lululemon, and now we know about the spin studio Ride Cycle Club also coming in 2017.

Retail Shop Play Open at 216 Ossington

216 Ossington has a new main floor tenant – a clothing and shoe store for men and women called Play.

The space was formerly home to hair salon Hero Heroine, which has recently moved upstairs at the same address. Play fills the space with some new brands including a variety of European designers of men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and bags.

Play has jackets from Welter Shelter, which will keep you warm and dry this winter in style. The store also sells fashions from Avelon and bags from Ucon Acrobatics.

When you come to Ossington to shop, definitely add Play to your itinerary.

The Weeknd Is Coming to Ossington

Starboy The Weeknd OssingtonExpect huge crowds on lower Ossington this Wednesday night/Thursday morning because music superstar The Weeknd is coming.

Special Pop-Up on Ossington

The Weeknd is having pop-up shops around the world this weekend to launch his new album. Toronto, his hometown, is getting a special pop-up and it’s on Ossington. Rally Ossington is hosting the entire event for the city. According to Universal Music Canada’s website, The Weeknd is coming on Thursday, November 24th to give away and sign merchandise. That’s right, not only will he be on Ossington, he’s giving away free stuff and autographing it. See what I mean about crowds?

If you want free stuff from The Weeknd

If you want free stuff, be in line in time to get a wristband on Thursday morning at 9am at Rally Ossington, which is located at 12 Ossington Avenue. The signing and giveaway will then take place the same day, November 24th, at 5PM at Rally.

Rally Ossington

Rally is an art gallery/event space at the bottom of Ossington Avenue, just north of Queen. Often host to pop-up shops, Rally had a big one with Kanye this past summer for his Pablo release. Line-ups were crazy then, as we posted on instagram, but Kanye wasn’t even there!

We’ll be sure to post some photos when The Weeknd comes to Ossington. Get ready!

Shopping The Pop-Up

Don’t worry if you can’t make it on Thursday. You won’t be able to meet The Weeknd, but stop by Rally on Friday or Saturday from 10a-7pm and Sunday from 10a-3pm. Merchandise related to the new Starboy album will be on sale while supplies last.

Ossington Shopping News: A Sale and an Opening

Two more reasons to come shopping on Ossington this weekend! We have a new Canadian retail store that just opened, and another hot store is having a big sale.

Jonathan + Olivia Sale

Fashionable retailer Jonathan + Olivia, at 49 Ossington, is having a blowout sale this weekend. Expect line-ups of fashionistas for this big sale. Items will be up to 90% off and includes merchandise from previous seasons and product samples. The sale will begin at 10am on Saturday, but, as I mentioned, there will probably be a line for people who want first pick of the merchandise.

Reigning Champ is Now Open

As of yesterday, Ossington has a new clothing store. Reigning Champ just opened in the main floor retail space of Motif Lofts at 41 Ossington. The brand new space looks great, with lots of light and high ceilings. The personnel are all really friendly and helpful. Reigning Champ is a Canadian business, founded in Vancouver, and this is the first Toronto branch of the company. The product line consists of very comfortable sweats, tees, hats and other related casual garments. The products are unisex clothing: for men and women. Sizes start at XS.  Below are some photos, but definitely stop in and shop for yourself!
