I stopped in to City Store Grocery today to check out the wares. Located on Dundas west of Ossington, next to Opera Bob’s, it’s a big space with lots of canned and boxed goods, a small cooler of beverages, and a small selection of fruits and vegetables. Yes, they do have tomatoes.
While not very different from the other markets on Dundas near Ossington, one thing that sets it apart is the selection of Clafouti croissants for $1.99. Yes, Clafouti croissants. And they had a few left at 11:15 on a Saturday. They even sell the fig!
Also open is Crepes and More, at 164 Ossington.
The”More” part of the name is no joke! They serve soup, pasta, assorted sandwiches and baked goods too. Someone commented that they found the prices expensive, but the crepes start at $5.95 which seems reasonable to me.
There are seats in the cafe to eat in, or you can take-out. Daylight hours only.
Crepes are expensive! Cost of 3 crepes, 1 coffee and 1 tea = $34.00 Worst part is they were not very good! Would not mind paying if they were good.

Re: City Store Grocery. 10 tomatoes, one avocado and a few greens do not a grocery store make, when I want to buy tomatoes, I most likely want to buy a lot of other fresh produce. It’s filled with processed, packaged goods.
Clafouti croissants are awful and I’ve heard they’re not made by them – just baked on site. Try the amazing Pain Perdu croissants at La Fromagerie on College St. – these are real croissants.
Did someone steal the middle aisle – it’s such an empty store. Central Convenience three doors West of City Store Grocery has a slightly larger selection of fresh produce and they sell wonderful Harmony organic chocolate milk.
I really want to support local business, but City Store Grocery brings nothing new to the neighbourhood and unless they have big plans, I don’t see this shop lasting more than six months.
What we really need are proper fresh produce stores, has anyone taken a walk on Roncesvalles or in Bloor West Village or on Yonge at Davisville (among many other places) – these areas have more than one shop close to each other and all seem to be thriving. We should at least lobby for a Sobeys Express or something similar.

My partner has eaten at Crepes and More and liked the crepe she had and found it not expensive. She did feel they should drop the Crepes and concentrate on the More – they could emphasize the home-cooked Italian food…
