Torontoist Names Joe Pantalone a “Villain” of 2009 – We agree!

In a series they are calling Heros and Villains of 2009, Torontoist has named Joe Pantalone one of the villians of 2009. We’d agree. By stifling the growth of the strip (and we understand aiming to enact more laws like this across the city to ensure Torontonians don’t go out and have fun) he’s slowed the growth of the neighbourhood and may not allow more seating in places like Pizza Libretto, who needs more seating and has the space upstairs.

Here’s hoping he runs for mayor….. and loses.

    What people forget is that King and John became the club district because Jack Layton made it that way. And, at the time, that was a good thing. The city needed some fun and entertainment. Ossington has enough current rules to ensure that doesn’t happen. We don’t need more. You can’t make dance clubs here, you were already limited in size (before the new laws), and there are restrictions being close to residential areas. If you understand that, you know that Joe was totally overreacting.

Ossington has enough current rules to ensure that doesn’t happen. We don’t need more. You can’t make dance clubs here, you were already limited in size (before the new laws), and there are restrictions being close to residential areas.     I don’t know how well existing laws would prevent Ossington and West Queen West from becoming another “velvet rope hell”, but it seems pretty brutal to put business owners and real estate owners on hold for such a long time. It would seem more reasonable to quickly firm up some rules and then start allowing applications. Seem pretty bizarre that a few smart people around a table cannot come up with some guidelines on what the practical difference between a club, bar, and restaurant is.
    As a resident though, I can say that on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights the streets do look like a “club district” which is not that great for all the families in the area. Good restaurants though!!!
    I do feel that there is some forced balancing that has to be done to keep on the plan of attracting more families downtown.
